 Chat Etiquette

Internet chat can be a very enjoyable experience. It gives you the chance to make new friends, stay in contact with old friends, talk on subjects which interest you, or just have a chat! Just like every other type of human interaction, there are rules and etiquette that make the chat experience easier for everyone. Here are some basic rules of engagement:

If you’re new to a room, don’t start typing whatever comes to your mind. Take a look at what the other chatters are discussing. Add something to the conversations and you won’t be a newcomer for long.

Be polite. Introduce yourself when you enter a room and welcome others as they enter.

Make sure that your CAPS LOCK key is not on. Remember that typing in capital letters is equivalent to SHOUTING in a chat room.

Think twice before you take offense at a comment or conversation. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what someone is trying to say if you can’t see or hear them.

Avoid conversation that might offend someone. Remember that chat in public channels is NOT private.

No flooding. Flooding or filling the chat window with lots of messages prevents other chatters from being able to participate in the conversation.

Show RESPECT to other people. If someone disrespects you, rather than argue with them and spoil the enjoyment of others, ignore them. Avoid the use of language or attitudes which may be offensive to others.

To send a private message to someone in the room, double-click on the nickname of the person you want to message, and then type your message in the newly opened window.

As with normal social convention, it is polite to ask first if the other person is happy to chat privately. If you do not wish to chat privately you can simply ignore the person.

Do not alienate others by speaking of graphic adult subjects, cyber-sex, offensive words / language, racial comments / slurs, vulgar / graphic comments / jokes, etc. in public. DO NOT send random private messages containing suggestive or adult-orientated comments. It is recommended that you ignore offenders, mute their private messages.
